Taxi driver Alton Smith makes no apology about being an Argentina supporter. The South American country’s flag is proudly flown on his Toyota Corolla.
“Argentina a best side inna the world and Messi a best player inna the world. Him a my baller! Him a go mek Argentina win the World Cup this year,” he told the Jamaica Observer’s weekly Auto magazine.
The Messi he is refering to is 30-year-old Lionel Messi, who plies his trade for the Spanish club Barcelona. He is his country’s all-time leading goalscorer. He has scored over 600 senior career goals for club and country. His style of play as a diminutive, left-footed dribbler drew comparisons with compatriot Diego Maradona, who in 2006 declared the then-teenager his successor.
Smith said he has been a fan of the South American team since the 1980s.
“Me a carry Argentina from Maradonna days. From me a little boy… Maradonna was the greatest baller God ever make,” he added.
