Easy does it for Sycure
Most dancehall artistes are eager to burst out of the gates in the quest for fame and fortune. Singjay Sycure prefers to take things slow and easy.
The Manchester native recorded his first demo at age 16 while still in high school. But Farewell, his debut song, was officially released only two years ago.
Hold On, co-produced by Sashain Records and Big Laugh Music, is one of the songs the 27-year-old artiste is currently pushing. Another is Your Love, produced by Unity Yawd Family.
Sycure (real name Ralston Richards) spoke of his methodical approach to music.
“To be honest, the best way to make music is positive. I don’t want to make music unless it really makes sense,” he told Jamaica Observer’s weekly Splash.
He hails from Plowden, a farming area in Manchester. His lists Manchester-born Garnet Silk as his biggest musical hero, and also names Turbulence, Barrington Levy and Terry Linen as major influences.
It was while attending New Forest Primary and Junior High School in neighbouring St Elizabeth that Sycure aspired to a music career. It would be a decade later before he recorded Farewell, which was done with Turbulence.
He describes his music as carrying a “spiritual energy” that reflects his Rastafarian faith.
Sycure hopes to release an EP, produced by Unity Yawd Family, by year end.
