KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Ministry of National Security through its flagship youth initiative, ‘We Transform’, says it will carry out Labour Day activities at four juvenile correctional centres across the island for Labour Day tomorrow.

The projects are being sponsored primarily by the Jamaica Union Conference of Seventh Day Adventists (JAMU) and other private sector partners to the tune of approximately J$1.4 million dollars.

The correctional centres to receive attention are South Camp Juvenile; Metcalfe Street Secure Remand Centre; Rio Cobre and the Hill Top Juvenile Correctional Centres.

In keeping with this year’s theme, Ramp it Up – Fix it Up, the ministry said that the JAMU, a number of officials from the ministry and the Department of Correctional Services, as well as, We Transform mentors and volunteers have committed to the painting and tiling of dormitories and administrative offices, plumbing repairs to dormitory bathrooms, the planting of fruit trees and ornamental plants at the correctional facilities.

The project is also being supported by Stewart’s Automotive Group who will participate on the day and have donated paint for the design of two areas for recreational activities at the South Camp Juvenile Centre.

As a special part of the activities and to reinforce the mentorship element of the We Transform Programme, there will be special appearances from Jeffrey ‘Agent Sasco’ Campbell, Kaci Fennell-Shirley and Peter Melhado, CEO of the ICD Group.

The project has been registered with the Labour Day Secretariat and forms part of the ministry’s Five Pillar Crime Reduction Strategy focused on rehabilitation and redemption.
