Trelawny Major League semis begin today
FALMOUTH, Trelawny — The race for honours in the Trelawny Football Association Grandeur Transportation Services/ Monymusk Rum Major League is expected to rise several notches today with the playing of the first legs of the semi-finals at Elleston Wakeland Centre starting at 1:30 pm.
Mid-season champions and favourites Falmouth United and last season’s beaten finalists Coopers Pen will meet in the second game which is expected to be, at least on paper, the most competitive of two, after Duanvale FC and promoted Friendship FC meet in the first game.
The return legs will be played next week at the same venue, with the winners on aggregate meeting in the final set for June 3, also at Elleston Wakeland.
Falmouth United are the only unbeaten team left in the competition and have run roughshod over the competition so far, scoring a league-high 30 goals while conceding just four goals, the least of any team.
They will, however, face a Coopers Pen team that has conceded just six goals and are unbeaten in their last seven games with their last defeat coming in February.
Over the period, Coopers Pen players have earned 19 of their 20 points and outscoring teams 21-1 during the run after scoring just two goals in their first three games.
Coopers Pen and their fans will hope they can carry over this momentum with Shannary Brown and Andre Palmer, who have combined to score 10 of Coopers Pen FC’s 23 goals, leading the charge.
Falmouth United have been the bullies of the league this season, however, dominating in just about all areas and on form could be too much for the Zone Two runners-up.
Twelve players have scored at least one goal for Falmouth United this season, led by Jamar Scott with six goals, Antonio Roberts with five, and Charles Grant with four.
In the first game, Duanvale FC will be seeking to get to the final and redeem themselves after a team showing in the mid-season final, but must show consistency after a slump late in the season.
Wanting only a point to secure their semi-final place with three games to go, Duanvale FC lost back-to-back games before closing the regular season with a big 9-1 thrashing of Daniel Town.
