Rita Marley Foundation Essay Competition now open
The Rita Marley Foundation has announced that the closing date for entries in its essay competition is June 4.
The topic this year is ‘Every man thinks his burden is the heaviest, because they feel the pain. Who feels it knows it. But don’t sit by the window gazing at the moon, get right up and move’ — lyrics from Dr Rita Marley’s song Who Feels It, Knows It.
The foundation’s manager, Rosemary Duncan, explained that the topic allows for breadth and depth of expression and interpretation and, as such, students are encouraged to pen riveting and interesting 1,000-word original pieces.
“Budding writers at high schools across Jamaica are now rapt in composing commanding pieces on the topic”, she said last week.
A panel of four educators will assess entries and the top three placements will be announced on Friday, June 29.
Prizes include cash, with the winning essay earmarked for publication in the foundation’s quarterly newsletter, Harambe.
Wolmer’s Girls’ School took all three spots in last year’s staging of the Rita Marley Foundation Essay Competition — Tamoy Campbell placed first, Danelle Mathews was second, and Kuan Kera Wheatley placed third.
