Cain, Casserly triumph at Damion Johnson All-Island Junior Open Tennis tourney
HOWARD Cain and Kaiel Casserly captured two titles at the 2018 Damion Johnson All-Island Junior Open Tennis Tournament, which ended at Eric Bell Tennis Centre last Saturday.
Cain, the top seed in the Under-18 boys’ singles, was also voted the most outstanding player of the tournament. He defeated second seed Romeo Edwards in the final 6-2, 6-3.
Both players attend Wolmer’s Boys’ School, are coached by David Sanguinetti, and have also played against each other in many local tournaments.
Cain’s other title came in the boys’ Under-16 singles final where he defeated second seed John Azar 6-3, 2-6, (10-3) in the super tie breaker set. Incidentally, Azar, who took a break from tennis, made a successful return by reaching the final. He lost in the boys’ 18 and Under singles semi-finals.
Meanwhile, 10-year-old Casserly surprised everyone when he won the boys’ Under-14 singles title by defeating Delano Reeves 6-4, 4-6, (11-10) in the super tie-breaker set.
Casserly’s other title was in the boys’ Under-12 singles final when he defeated Matthew James 8-6.
Meosha Fox captured the girls’ Under-16 title by defeating Peta-Gaye Graham easily in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.
Tournament Director David Sanguinetti said despite players preparing for the CXC examinations, the tournament was a success and well-attended, with over 60 entries.
“Many of the top seeds came through to the finals, but there were a few emerging players who performed well throughout the two weekends of the tournament,” Sanguinetti pointed out.
