JLP retains Homestead division
CLARENDON, Jamaica —The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) yesterday easily retained the Homestead division of the St Catherine Municipal Corporation.
The JLP’s Mark Anthony McLean scored 1,409 votes to 136 for the People’s National Party’s (PNP) Janet Grayson in the preliminary count.
Yesterday’s by-election was triggered by the untimely death of the former councillor for the division, Leon Palmer, in a motor vehicle accident on the Old Harbour main road in March. A total of 9,471electors were eligible to participate in the poll. However, only 1,545, or 16.3 per cent, took the time to vote yesterday.
Homestead is one of three municipal council divisions in the constituency of South Central St. Catherine, which is represented by Minister of Science, Energy and Technology, Dr Andrew Wheatley. All three divisions are represented by the JLP. The PNP last won the Homestead division in 1981.
