Suicide suspected as semi-nude woman plunges into the sea
When Janet Morgan reportedly told her husband Clive that she was going to visit her mother in a neighbouring community in Portland he did not know that was the last time he would see her alive.
Police say they have no record of the incident, but Clive Morgan told the Jamaica Observer that eyewitnesses recount seeing the woman strip before plunging to her death in the sea.
The 59-year-old, of Zion Hill in the parish, said that he didn’t see his wife’s death coming. The two have been together for 23 years, but married for 18.
“She look ’bout breakfast the Monday morning and give me after mi carry mi grandson go school and come back. She said she was going to her mother, which she always do. Monday evening mi a try fi get her but her phone wasn’t picking up,” he said.
He told the Observer that on Tuesday he went to a grave digging and then straight to work. He said after leaving work he visited his wife’s sister in Fairy Hill, having still not been able to reach her.
“Mi seh call your mother because I am calling her and Janet and not getting her. When she called, the mother said she was not there. So mi start worry now. Mi call somebody else and dem nuh see her either,” the husband stated.
The following day, he said, he went “straight a station” to make a report, but was told by the police not to panic. He said that he left the police station and went to Port Antonio Hospital, theorising that something might have happened to his wife.
“When mi go a di hospital nobody nuh see her. Likkle after mi get a call from di lady weh rent wi di place. She seh fi meet dem a Port Antonio Police Station. When mi go a di station mi ask who call mi. Same time a police ask mi if a me report a missing person. So mi seh yes and describe her and it was her,” said Morgan, who advised the Observer that the police presented clothing similar to those his wife was believed to have left home in. He added that his wife’s death has left him “cut up”.
He said she had been concerned about her health after multiple visits to the doctor which yielded no positive results.
“She did have pinch nerves and we a go through a lot, so she was depressed and she seh people a tell her seh, boy, it look like a cancer she a catch since the doctors can’t tell her what wrong, although she was on medication. That stress her out because she never want to hear that.
“Mi feel a way about it, because mi naah expect this, but same time mi a hold off. Mi still a go work and suh but mi still can’t believe this. People seh she strip and only in her panty and brassiere, and when she went in she never come back out. But, it’s life and we just haffi live.
“It’s just me and the three children and mi grandchildren leave now, and I don’t know how I going manage, but we have to. I would like if I can get some assistance,” said.
