Technology, forensics must become part of policing in Ja — Chang
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Minister of National Security, Dr Horace Chang says developments in technology, forensic science and intelligence-gathering must become part of policing in Jamaica.
Dr Chang made the statement during the passing out parade for 195 new constables at the National Police College of Jamaica, Harman Barracks in Kingston yesterday.
Chang said the Government is on a move to ensure that members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) are adequately equipped to effectively respond to crime and violence.
“Criminals are now heavily financed and are utilising the technological advances of the 21st century to facilitate their illicit and destructive behaviours. The police cannot be called upon to respond effectively without being appropriately equipped and trained,” he noted.
Chang said he has mandated the ministry to move quickly to complete the acquisition of Information Communication Technology (ICT) solutions and applications that will improve the efficiency of the force.
He added that the ministry will also be upgrading police stations in order to improve working conditions for members of the JCF and create an environment that is more conducive to confidential reporting.
“We have identified police stations that will be refurbished into centres of excellence,” he said.
