Stephens triumphs at Damion Johnson All-Island Open Junior Tennis Championships
MICHAELA Stephens defeated Emma Dibbs 6-2, 6-3 to capture the Girls’ Under-18 singles final at the 2018 Damion Johnson All-Island Open Junior Tennis Championships played at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre on Sunday.
Stephens, one of the leading young local tennis players, reached the final by defeating unseeded Katherine Dibbs 8-0 in her semi-final, while unseeded Emma Dibbs beat unseeded Peta-Gaye Graham 8-1 in the other semi-final.
Meanwhile, in the Under-18 boys’ singles, top seed Damani Cain will face second-seeded Romeo Edwards in the final today. The final had to be postponed due to heavy showers last Sunday.
In the semi-finals, Cain gained a walk over against unseeded John Azar, while Edwards defeated unseeded Keyon’dre Clarke in straight sets 6-1, 6-3.
Cain and Azar will meet in the Under-16 boys’ singles final to be played today. In the semi-finals, Cain cruised past unseeded Delano Reeves in straight sets 6-0, 6-1, while third-seeded Azar defeated second-seeded Keyon’dre Clarke in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 in the other semi-final.
Fourth-seeded Kaiel Casserly upset second seed, Jason Duval in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 in his semi-final while the unseeded Delano Reeves defeated unseeded Nathan Emmanuel in straight sets 6-4, 6-0 in the other semi-final.
Kaiel Casserly is currently leading Matthew James 6-2 in the boys’ Under-12 singles after the first set. The match will continue today with the start of the second set.
Alyssa Pairman with two wins in the singles, and no defeats is the leader in the Girls’ Under-14 round-robin format.
Trophies are to be presented to the winners and runners-up in each category, while ranking points will be awarded.
