Performance analysis for raceday of Wednesday, May 9, 2018
RACE 1- $450-400,000 CLAIMING (3YOS&UP) 1000METRES/5FURLS.ROUND
At the break, Dinner By Seven, who finished third, got into the path of El Cliente, causing him to lose ground and following an inquiry their positions were reversed. Runjohnny Run led for 800m under pressure from Like A Lady on his inside, and was worn down entering the last 200 metres and could not deny the mare her third-consecutive victory. Like A Lady was well handled by jockey Robert Halledeen.
RACE 2-MAIDEN SPECIAL WEIGHT (3-YEAR-OLDS) 1820METRES/9FURLS.+25YARDS
Sendamessagetomama broke sharply, but not Ricky Ricardo who stumbled out amd regained his balance quickly enough. Pressed by Anwar, Sendamessagetomama led on the bridle into the backstretch and went clear at the top of the lane. Ricky Ricardo, ridden hard from 800m out, mended well from this point and got on terms with Sendamessagetomama inside the last 150 and outstayed him by just over a length.
RACE 3-$250-210,000 CLAIMING (3YOS&UP) 1600METRES/8FURLS
The riders of Court Call and No Money Friend had similar tactics as they disputed the lead at a strong gallop down the backstretch. Also Correct travelled easily in third with Late N Drafty in fourth and going easily and the rest strung out behind. The leaders had no answers when All Correct demanded the lead at the top of the stretch, but was immediately threatened by Late N Drafty. The seven-length victory by Late N Drafty (20-1) caught most by surprise as this was a sudden return to form after a 46-length defeat in her last race.
RACE 4-RESTRICTED ALLOWANCE V (5YOS&UP/NW2) 1000METRES/5FURLS.STR.
Prince Sammo and Smokscreen disputed the lead with Lady V nearer the stand side, while Jon Marshall ran prominently in mid-track. Going clear when asked for his decisive effort, Prince Sammo proved to be much the best and sprinted away to win by over five lengths. Cat’s Rigger got by the tired leaders inside the last 100 metres to secure second.
RACE 5-RESTRICTED STAKES (3YOS&UP) 1820METRES/9FURLS.+25YARDS.
Peking Cruz led into backstretch with Uncle Frank going exceptionally well in pursuit with Sotomayor being urged to stay in touch. Trying to escape the field, Peking Cruz established an unconvincing advantage approaching the final bend, but failed to stay the trip. Uncle Frank took over the lead in the upper stretch as the one-paced Sotomayor ran wide and proved to be no threat thereafter. Biblical Legend, hard-ridden from 800 metres out, was staying on well inside the last 100 metres, but Uncle Frank had enough momentum to last home by only a neck.
RACE 6-$120,000 CLAIMING (3YOS&UP) 600METRES/3FURLONGS STRAIGHT
Despite being away from last August, Rally Baby was unwisely sent off the favourite and failed to finish. Camouflage led on the far side while Song On Track held the advantage nearer the stands. Camouflage entered the last 150 metres with a convincing advantage, but could not withstand the finishing rush of 10-year-old First ‘K’ Boy who scored by a length and a half. Notably, following the race, seven of the 13 starters were dismounted and led back by the riders, which was a clear suggestion of unsoundness.
RACE 7-MAIDEN SPECIAL WEIGHT (4YOS&UP) 800METRES/4FURLS.STR
Twilight Eruption and debutant Unexpected disputed the lead on the stand side, while Mr Pantheon was slowly into stride to hurt his chances immediately. Having shown good speed in her last two starts, the reduction in distance and the lighter weight gave Twilight Eruption the advantage coming inside the last 100 metres and she was able to hold the promising Unexpected by a half a length. Mr Pantheon did recover for his untidy beginning to hold every chance 150 metres out but the effort petered out. The win by Twilight Eruption was the first for new trainer Byron Davis.
RACE 8-MAIDEN CONDITION (5YOS&UP) 800METRES/4FURLS STRAIGHT
Guava Ground was well handled by the female apprentice rider being in the front group early, while Son Of Taqarub, with an untidy start, would be left with too much to do. Several, including Lola Grey, Twilight Princess and Astro, in a rush to stay prominent, ran in a group to the top of the stretch. Guava Ground shot into a clear lead early in the last 400 metres and was never threatened thereafter with long shot Cody’s Dream securing the runner-up spot just over three lengths adrift.
RACE 9-RESTRICTED ALLOWANCE (4-YEAR-OLDS&UPWARDS) 1100METRES/5 1/2FURLS
Super Bolt looked a fine specimen ready to compete in the post-parade and did not disappoint his backers. From a fantastically clean break he sprinted clear and had all in trouble by establishing a clear lead at the top of the stretch. Entering the last 200 metres, Killer Bee came out of the chasing pack and ran on well but was still two and a half behind Super Bolt when the 1,100-metre dash was completed.
RACE 10-$180,000 CLAIMING (4-YEAR-OLDS&UPWARDS) 1400METRES/7FURLONGS
Sunshine City dominated the early fractions and had a clear advantage with 800 metres to come. Going in chase of the front-runner approaching the home straight, the well handicapped Double Deal took the available inside path to get closer to Sunshine City. When the inevitable challenge came from Double Deal, Sunshine City had no effective response and was well outstayed, with apprentice Anthony Thomas winning his fourth race on the day.
