NWA prohibits right turns from Marcus Garvey Drive at Three Mile intersection
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The National Works Agency (NWA) has prohibited U-turns and right turns from Marcus Garvey Drive at the Three Mile intersection in Kingston.
The change, which took effect today, is to facilitate road rehabilitation works that are now underway in Three Miles as part of the Hagley Park Road Improvement project, the agency said in a release this afternoon.
This change will be maintained throughout the construction period.
Manager, communication and customer services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw, said motorists travelling from Marcus Garvey Drive or the Causeway, wishing to access Spanish Town Road, should travel easterly along Marcus Garvey Drive and use East Avenue to do so.
“Additionally, the concrete median and traffic signal poles in the vicinity of the gas station at Three Miles, will be removed to allow the two right turning lanes travelling from the direction of Six Miles onto Marcus Garvey Drive to be received unhindered.
“The works in the area have resulted in one of the receiving lanes being partially blocked, effectively reducing the carriageway to single lane. Persons travelling towards Hagley Park Road from the direction of Marcus Garvey Drive will continue to be accommodated in two through lanes,” said the NWA.
Shaw reminded road users who regularly use the Three Miles area to plan their travels over the next several months, as the area will continue to be an active work zone and traffic delays are likely to occur.
The NWA said it will continue to assess the traffic situation as the construction progresses and modifications will be made as deemed necessary.
Under the Hagley Park Road Improvement Project, approximately 3.7 kilometres of roadway, between Maxfield Avenue and Portia Simpson Miller Square is being widened.
The number of available lanes will move from two to four and will also see the construction of two overpass bridges, the installation of sidewalks and drains, and the improvement and signalisation of several intersections.
The project is to be completed within 18 months.
