Road Traffic Act delayed again in Senate
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The debate on the Road Traffic Act (RTA) 2018 was today suspended in the Senate for at least another week.
No reason was given for the suspension but, it was requested by Leader of Government Business, Senator Kamina Johnson Smith, after about two-thirds of the 21-member Senate participated in debating the long delayed legislation, yesterday.
The debate is likely to resume next week, but there was no confirmation that it would. At least one more member, Senator Floyd Morris (Opposition), is expected to make a contribution when it resumes.
Despite raising concerns about various aspects of the Bill, all the speakers so far in the debate have expressed full support for the objective and have committed to supporting its passage.
OBSERVER ONLINE was unable to get an explanation from Senator Johnson Smith as to why the debate has again been suspended. It was suspended last week Friday, after her opening contribution. Balford Henry
