St James tag Trelawny 3-0 in JFF/SportsMax Elite Football League
ST JAMES United defeated Trelawny Barons 3-0 as the 2018 Jamaica Football Federation (JFF)/SportsMax Elite Football League West Zone competition continued at Jarrett Park in Montego Bay last Saturday.
The win was St James’s second from four starts, along with two defeats, while it was the fourth loss for the Barons from as many outings. The win also pushed St James into joint third position with St Elizabeth Tigers on six points each. The Tigers have played one game more than St James. The Barons sit at the bottom of the points standings without a point.
The goal scorers in St James’s 3-0 win over the Barons were Sajano Birch in the 21st minute, Ewan Barton in the 32rd, and Macham Smith in the 59th minute.
In another game played at the same venue, Westmoreland Warriors held Manchester Lions to an exciting 2-2 draw. The Lions, who are in third spot, move to eight points from four starts, while the Warriors picked up their second point in the competition from four outings.
Jerome Forbes and Nazime Matalic scored for the Warriors in the 21st and 87th minutes, respectively, while Ajay Chin and Marlando Maxwell scored in the 75th and 91st minutes, respectively, for the Lions.
Leaders Clarendon Galaxy and St Elizabeth Tigers played to a 1-1 draw at Juici Park in Clarendon. The draw puts Galaxy on 10 points, while the Tigers moved to six points. Mark Rodney found the equaliser for Galaxy in the 83rd minute after the Tigers had taken the lead through a 53rd minute goal from Rajay Wright.
The competition continues this Saturday with Manchester Lions vs St James United at 1:45 pm, Westmoreland Warriors vs Hanover Patriots at 3:45 pm at the Frome Sports Club; Trelawny Barons vs Clarendon Galaxy at 3:45 pm at the Elleston Wakeland Centre.
Meanwhile, East Zone will be out of action again this week awaiting the completion of the preliminary rounds in West Zone.
For the play-off, the second-placed team from East Zone will meet the third-placed team from West Zone, and the third-placed team from East will face the team that finishes second in the West Zone.
These matches are scheduled to be played on Saturday, May 12, 2018. The two winners will then meet the East and West Zone teams in the semi-finals scheduled to be played Saturday, May 19, 2018.
