Coming soon: Local golf-inspired movie
A movie depicting the academic struggles of a young man whose life was transformed through golf is in the pipeline, revealed general manager of Sandals Golf and Country Club Miguel Arthurs.
Arthurs, the conceptualiser behind the inaugural Junior Golf and Jerk Festival to be held on Saturday, May 5, was speaking at the launch at the ATL Showroom on Half Way Tree Road last Tuesday.
The event, dubbed a “celebration of sports, food and charity”, will be held on the sprawling grounds of the Sandals Golf and Country Club in the hills of Upton, Ocho Rios, St Ann.
“We are actually in the beginning stage of creating the movie. It’s a short film about a 10-year-old who is struggling with geography and maths and who is also been bullied,” said Arthurs.
According to the Sandals official, the troubled young man prays for help and God sends a golf angel known as Grant who would change his life by telling him about the Sandals Foundation Junior Programme at Sandals Golf and Country Club.
“He goes down there with the gifts that Grant gives him, the hat that makes him understand geography… the club, the glove actually improve him while learning to play golf in his studies and when he finished he actually becomes the Caribbean Junior champion,” said Arthurs.
“Then you will see what he learns in golf, the sportsmanship, the discipline, the integrity. He is able to calculate his scores and also becomes a better person and improves his life,” he reiterated.
That story sounds very much like that of Romaine Evans, who while picking mangoes, saw what was happening at the Sandals Golf and Country Club which he later joined and became Caribbean Junior champion in 2015.
The Sandals Golf and Jerk Festival will be the first of its kind in the world, a tournament that is more than just golf, but a lifestyle that will transform youth development.
“It’s not golf and jerk, it’s much more than that. On that day while the golfers are strutting their stuff… there will be jerk pan chef competitors who will actually be on the physical tee bucks right behind the golfers.
“You will see the smoke, smell the aroma as they jerk up a feast after which they will be judged and a winner chosen,” Arthurs explained.
