Lewis looks to add to Team Jamaica’s lead in Contender Series
Team Canada’s Waseem El Sinawi believes he has the ammunition of height, reach, jab and overall boxing skills to destroy his Jamaican opponent Ramel Lewis and hand Canada their first win in the third fight of the Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum Contender Boxing Series at the Chinese Benevolent Association Auditorium tonight.
Fight time begins at eight o’clock.
A 15-fight welterweight contest with the Contender title and $2 million up for grabs by the winner is scheduled between Jamaica and Canada and is at the preliminary stages with Jamaica leading 2-0.
A three-fight card is on offer with two amateur bouts of three rounds each as the under card for the main welterweight contest between Lewis and El Sinawi going five rounds.
Both boxers sounded supremely confident of their ability to persevere to the end. El Sinawi said he has not fought in five months but had been training assiduously to meet the occasion. Lewis on the other hand has never looked in better condition than he looked yesterday as both weighed in at 146.6 lb.
“I had a great preparation in Detroit. I had a great team. I worked out against some good opponents to get me prepared for this fight,” said El Sinawi.
He added: “I want to make a statement. I have beaten some of the best boxers in the world as an amateur but when I turned pro my record went down the drain.
“Jamaican boxers are brawlers. They have some nice movements but I think that I have the skill level. My skill level is acceptable. I have been fighting my whole life. I have the determination and the skill to operate on this guy mentally and technically. When I fought Zeferino I was not in shape then but now I am in good shape and I am coming to take over,” El Sinawi warned.
A subdued but quite confident Lewis said: “I am in very good boxing shape at the moment. I have been training with the aim to take this fight to the final. So my plan is to take it one step at a time and the shape that I am in I am definitely ready.
“I never have a problem with the longer reaches of my opponents. When I enter the ring I just have to adjust and apply my own strategy. Do what I have to do then get out of there. This is a fight I definitely have to win and I am going out there to get the job done,” Lewis said.
