Dr Mavis Gilmour makes it 92 not out
Former Member of Parliament for St Andrew West Rural and retired Cabinet minister Dr Mavis Gilmour continues to put West Indies batsmen to shame by inching close to her century when she marked the 92nd anniversary of her birth on Friday at her home in St Andrew. The veteran Jamaica Labour Party stalwart entertained a small group of family and close friends as they rolled back the years with anecdotes and merrymaking.
Dr Gilmour was born on April 13, 1926 in St Elizabeth. She attended Blake’s Tutorial College; Howard University in Washington DC, USA; and the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. Dr Gilmour studied medicine and went on to become the first woman surgeon in the Caribbean, serving the Kingston Public Hospital from 1960 to 1976. She entered elective politics in 1976 and won the St Andrew West Rural seat which she held until 1989. As a member of Edward Seaga’s Cabinet, she served as minister of education from 1980 to 1986 when she was replaced by Dr Neville Gallimore; and as the first minister of social security and consumer affairs from 1986 to 1989.
