21-second knock down
Team Jamaica’s ranked outsider Neco Yeyo dropped a bombshell on the Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum Boxing Series at the Chinese Benevolent Association Auditorium in Kingston on Wednesday night with his sensational 21-second first-round knockout of Team Canada’s number one, Mayron “The Brazilian Bomber” Zeferino.
The victory handed Team Jamaica a 2-0 lead in the series after two fights.
Both boxers had different approaches to the opening round with Zeferino, the more accomplished technician, easing his way into the fight. On the other hand, Yeyo went at Zeferino like a ball of fire and delivered a flurry of punches.
Yeyo eventually cornered the Canadian and Zeferino, in an effort to escape the flurry, raised his head while coming out of a crouch. Zeferino then dropped his left shoulder guard to open up his defence and he was immediately hammered with a fierce right to the left jaw.
The blow knocked him senseless against the the ropes.
Referee Peter Richard stepped in and duly ordered Yeyo to a neutral corner while Zeferino struggled to his feet.
Richards then began his count, but after reaching four, he saw that the Canadian boxer was out on his feet and took the decision to save Zeferino from further punishment and stopped the contest.
Yeyo was later declared the winner on consultation.
The victor said his win was due, in part, to following his coach’s instructions.
“I am not surprised by the victory [as] I came here to win. My coach (Earl “Boom Boom” Fosakin) had instructed me how to approach this fight and I followed his instructions and we came out victorious,” Yeyo said.
Coach Foskin was all smiles when he spoke with the Jamaica Observer
“I am pleased with Neco’s performance…. I instructed him to stay close to his fighter… as he has a habit of dropping his left shoulder. When this happens he is open for that right, and it so happened in the first round and Nico was on target,” beamed the coach.
Zeferino recalled his punishment.
“He hit me with a good shot…. I got caught on the ropes and he hit me with a couple more shots. What can I say? He was the better man tonight,” he said.
