Late developing Lightning Queen begins on right footing
Lightning McQueen trained by Philip Feanny for owners 2 Penyu, made an expected winning start at Caymanas Park on Saturday, March 31, 2018.
Going six furlongs (1200m), Lightning McQueen squandered an 11-horse field by all of 10 widening lengths to win the native-bred, three-year-oldmaiden-conditioned race while being ridden by the leading jockey Anthony Thomas.
Lightning McQueen should have made his debut almost two weeks ago but was turned back from the races prior to race time listed by the official race book as being lame.
He, however, returned on Saturday this time in good shape and duly went on to open his winning account in a manner that should give his connections some hope for later in the season.
Lightning McQueen shot to the early lead when the gates were opened and was immediately attacked by debutante Bad Boy Trump (Shane Ellis) and the two went at it from there on.
The pressing Bad Boy Trump couldn’t get by Lightning McQueen and when Thomas asked for acceleration, the son of Adore The Gold answered the request and powered away from the field in deep stretch to win comfortably.
Son Son (Omar Walker) came through well for second money ahead of the green-looking Bad Boy Trump in third. The final time was a moderate 1:14.1 with splits of 23.2 and 47.1.
“He is a nice and late developing colt. Although he ran well, he can be waited on a little. I thought he did perform well enough to compete at the early stages with some distinction but it could do more harm than good and I would not like that. So, we will wait and see what prospects there are in the latter part of the season and work by that,” Feanny explained.
