#FLOWCariftaGames: J’cans sweep sprint hurdles with 3 records
NASSAU, Bahamas — Jamaicans set three championships records on their way to sweeping the gold medals in the sprint hurdles finals on today’s final day of the 47th CARIFTA Games at the Thomas A Robinson stadium in Nassau, Bahamas.
Crystal Morrison broke Melaine Walker’s record in the Under 17 girls’ final, Vashaun Vascianna broke Wilhem Belocian’s mark in the Under 17 boys’ while Amoi Brown retained her Girls’ Under 20 title whole breaking the record set by another Jamaican Samantha Elliott.
Orlando Bennett won the Under 20 boys’ 110m hurdles gold to complete the sweep as Jamaica won seven medals in the four finals.
Morrison ran 13.11 seconds (1.7m/s) to break the 13.51 seconds set by Walker in 1999 as another Jamaican Ackera Nugent was second in 13.35 seconds with Barbados’ Sarah Belle taking the bronze in 13.55 seconds.
Vascianna clocked 13.60 seconds (1.9m/s) beating the 13.75 seconds set by Guadeloupe’s Belocian in 2011 to win the Under 17 boys’ 110m hurdles, another first and second for Jamaica as Jahvel Granville, a gold medallist in the 4x100m relay, was second in 13.77 seconds with The Bahamas’ Raymond Oriaki taking the bronze in 13.94 seconds, his third medal of the weekend.
Brown retained her title in the Under 20 100m hurdles final after clocking 13.15 seconds (1.0m/s) under the 13.42 seconds set in 2010 by Elliott.
Dazsay Freeman was second in 13.39 seconds, also under the old time with the Bahamas’ Sasha Wells taking the bronze with 13.44 seconds.
Stennett had to come from behind over the last three hurdles to catch the fast starting Jeanice Laviolette of Guadeloupe, to win in a wind-aided 13.25 seconds (3.0m/s) to 13.52 seconds with the Bahamas’ Oscar Smith third in 13.57 seconds.
The second Jamaican Brithon Senior was fifth in 13.76 seconds.
