#FLOWCariftaGames: Eight Jamaicans into 100m finals
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica will have two representatives in each of the four 100m finals on today the first day of the 47th CARIFTA Games at the Thomas A Robinson stadium after the first rounds earlier this afternoon.
Jamaica won just one of the four goal medals in last year’s staging in Curacao but the promise is for more gold medals later today.
Fresh from her World Age Group record run three weeks ago, Briana Williams, the bronze medal winner last year, leads the girls’ Under-17 section after running a wind aided 11.51 seconds (3.2m/s) to win the second of two semis-final heats.
The other Jamaican Serena Cole had the eighth best time from the preliminaries, 12.07 seconds (1.4m/s).
Jamaicans Terrique Stennett 10.82 seconds (2.4m/s) and Andre Bent 10.83 seconds (1.7m/s) lead the boys’ Under-17 section ahead of Barbados’ Darian Clarke- 10.86 seconds (2.4m/s) and Grenada’s Nazzio John- 10.91 seconds (1.7m/s).
Michae Harriott 11.54 seconds (3.3m/s) leads the Under-20 girls’ qualifying with Ockera Myrie 11.60 (2.5m/s) tied in third with Trinidad’s Akilah Lewis while Jamaican-based Julien Alfred of St Lucia ran 11,59 seconds (2.5m/s) to win her first round heat.
Michael Bentley who was part of the Under-18 4x100m gold medal winning relay team last year had the second best time 10.41 seconds (1.8m/s) in the Under-20 boys’ 100m, behind the Bahamas’ Joel Johnson’s 10.40 (1.3m/s) with the other Jamaican Ryiem Robertson also advancing with 10.64 seconds (1.1m/s) after winning his heat.
