Sigma Run nets over 500lb of plastic bottles
Sagicor Group Jamaica has announced that in addition to the $50 million raised for its two beneficiaries, the 20th staging of its 5K charity run netted over 14,400 recycling bottles weighing 576 pounds.
The Sigma Corporate Run was staged in New Kingston two Sundays ago and attracted over 26,000 participants.
After the race, Sagicor, in partnership with Recycling Partners of Jamaica Limited, (RPJL) collected the juice and water bottles left in bins and along the race route.
Last year they collected 8,100 bottles.
“It is a remarkable feat that we have seen an increase of over 78 per cent of bottles collected,” said Tarah-Monique Bryan of RPJL. “It is important that we not only give back to our community, but also to our environment. By demonstrating this level of success at such a large gathering, we are hoping that it will encourage others to incorporate more recycling elements when planning their next event.”
Alysia White, Assistant Vice-President, Group Marketing, Sagicor Group Jamaica, said: “The Sagicor team is quite pleased that we were able to achieve this significant increase in plastic bottle collection under our Go Green Initiative in partnership with RPJL and we’re looking forward to continuing this partnership for our future Sigma Run events.”
The proceeds from the charity run are earmarked for St Christopher’s School for the Deaf and the neonatal unit at Spanish Town Hospital.
