Renewed interest in Florida case after murder in Jamaica
POLICE in Florida have a renewed interest in a decade-old murder case following the arrest of Omar “Best” Collymore in Jamaica almost two weeks ago.
Collymore, who is accused of masterminding the murder of his wife Simone Campbell-Collymore on Stanley Terrace in Red Hills, St Andrew, has piqued the curiosity of US authorities as his former girlfriend, Angela Aguiar was also killed in Florida 10 years ago.
According to the Sun Sentinel, Fort Lauderdale Detective Tracey Figone, in a statement, noted the similarities between the murders of Campbell-Collymore and Aguiar, who was killed on June 30, 2008.
Both women were romantically involved with Collymore and had insurance policies that listed him as a beneficiary when they were killed, according to the detective.
Collymore reportedly collected US$400,000 from Aguiar’s US$1-million policy, with her son, Elijah Aguiar, getting the rest.
He was a suspect in Aguiar’s death but Florida police were unable to link him to her murder, the Sun Sentinel further reported.
Aguiar was shot dead about 3:30 am while they were both on their way to meet friends at a bar.
Collymore reported that as they got out of their truck, an unknown assailant approached and shot her in the head and chest. He was not hurt during the attack, as he said he took cover after seeing the gun.
Campbell-Collymore, a businesswoman, was travelling in a taxi in the Red Hills area on January 2 when gunmen opened fire, hitting her and Winston Walters — the driver of the taxi.
Both reportedly died on the spot.
Collymore and his two co-accused, Michael Adams and Dewayne Pink, were taken to court last Friday and were remanded until February 26 when the case will again be mentioned.
