Jamaica’s leading juniors set for Quest Tennis Series
SEVERAL of Jamaica’s top junior players are expected to play in the fourth staging of the Quest Super Series Tennis Tournament at Liguanea Club in New Kingston, set to begin today and end on Sunday.
The Quest Super Series started last September and has attracted a lot of local junior players in a number of age groups.
This edition of the Quest Super Series Tennis Tournament was launched at a press conference at Quest Security’s head office on Wednesday.
“So far 60 entries is still very good, and the more tournaments we organise, you will see the increase in players coming to participate,” said Tournament Director David Isaacs during his overview.
He said, apart from just playing in the tournament, players will be able to pick up Universal Rating Points in order to be given scholarships to colleges in the United States of America.
Isaacs outlined that there will be events for the Boys’ and Girls’ Under-18, Under-14, and Under-12 age groups.
Added to tournament is also the junior boys and girls who will be featured in the Russell Tennis Academy (RTA) Mini Tennis Tournament for Under-10, Under-8 and Under-6.
As learners, these youngsters will play with orange balls in half-court matches. The mini tournament is to be played on Sunday.
The tournament director said some of the leading junior players expected to be on show in the Boys’ Under-18 are: Tariq Simons, Cole McNair, Joshua Graveney, Milton Rose, and Alex Rose.
Top Jamaican junior player Michaela Stephens is expected to headline the Girls’ Under-18 singles, along with Emma Dibbs, Shea-Ann Kameka, Moesha Fox, Haley McNair, Iesha Sterling, Abigail Perue, Kailey Chin, among others.
Joseph Dibbs, managing director of Quest Security Services Limited — and one of the organisers of the Quest Super Series Tennis Tournament — said he was very impressed with the turnout and support.
“We need to have more tournaments in Jamaica so that these young players can develop, and [since] last year I can see the improvement in their playing,” Dibbs said.
