Azar, Fox top Liguanea Club Open Junior Tennis Championships
DANIEL Azar and Moesha Fox emerged winners of the Boys’ Under-16 and girls’ Open singles titles, respectively, at the 2018 Liguanea Club Open Junior Tennis Championships that ended at Liguanea Club in New Kingston on Sunday.
The fourth-seeded Azar defeated top seed Keyondre Clarke in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. In the semi-finals, Azar defeated unseeded Blake Shoucair 6-4, 6-3, while Clarke had brushed aside unseeded Cole McNair 6-0, 6-2.
Second seed Joshua Graveney was beaten by Shoucair 9-7 in the second round, while McCain stopped third seed Richard Barnett 9-7 in his second-round match.
Meanwhile, top-seeded Fox was strongly challenged in the girls’ Open final by second seed Hayley McNair, who held out handsomely to win in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. Earlier, Fox had defeated fourth-seeded Kobi Walcott 6-4, 6-0 in her second-round encounter, while McNair stopped third seed Kailey Chin in second-round action 6-3, 6-1.
The Girls’ 14 and under singles was won by top seed Alicia Pairman, who crushed unseeded Courtney Chin in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. In semi-final action, Pairman beat fourth seed Cal Drummond, while Chin defeated unseeded Isabelle Champagne 6-0, 6-2.
Chin had lost to second seed Re-Anna Barclay, but advanced to the second round as her conqueror should not have played in the girls’ 14 and under age group. Champagne gained a walk over from third-seeded Thandie Sampson in the second round.
The Boys’ 14 and under round robin singles was won by Kaiel Casserly, who won his three matches. He defeated Delano Reeves 9-7, Alex Cephas 8-3 and Jason Duval 8-3, while Reeves was the runner-up with two wins over Duval 8-2 and Cephas 8-0, but lost 7-9 to Casserly.
Ashwin Khemlani captured the singles title in the Boys’ 12 and under round robin competition by winning all three matches.
Khemlani crushed Jahmarie Swan 6-0, Domini Shelton 6-3, and Dylan Madden 6-2 to top the group, while Shelton finished second with two wins against Swan 6-0, and Madden 6-0.
The Boys’ Under-16 consolation singles was won by Richard Barnett, who defeated Russell Fairman 8-3.
Tournament Director Llockett McGregor said the championship was a successful one although it was the first tennis competition of the year.
“There were several good and entertaining matches that were very competitive, and we look forward to a much bigger players’ support at the second in the series that will be held in March,” he said.
The Liguanea Club Open Junior Championships is part of the Lockett McGregor Junior Development Series that has been played for the past four years.
