Pagon faces Clarke in 3rd round of JN Open Tennis Championships
THIRD seed Dwayne Pagon will go up against unseeded Keyondre Clarke as action continues today in the third round of the men’s singles at the 2017 Jamaica National (JN) Open Tennis Tournament being played at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston.
Pagon, many-time runner-up to defending champions Damion Johnson, brushed away unseeded Gregory Chin 6-0, 6-0 in his second-round match played on Sunday, while Clarke upset 15th seed Gawayne Coxx in straight sets 7-5, 6-3. This match begins at 6:30 pm.
Meanwhile, second seed Duainne Miller will play his second-round match this evening against Nicholas Chung. Chung defeated Jevaun Hewitt 6-7, 7-6, 9-9 retired in the super tie-breaker set.
Fifth-seeded Matthew Rodriquez will also play his second-round match today against unseeded Jason Calloo, starting at 6:30 pm. Both players received a bye into the second round.
Defending men’s singles champion and top seed Damion Johnson was down to play his second-round match against John Tyson. The latter had gained a walk over from Nigel Casserly into the second round.
In second-round matches on Sunday, eighth-seed of Yussuf Migoko gained a walk-over against Brendon White to advance into the third round; Julius Briggs upset 12th seed Leighton Burton in straight sets 6-3, 6-2; Mivkel Riley brushed aside Anthony Burgess Jr 6-1, 6-0; ninth seed Alan McNab knocked out Garth Darby 6-0, 6-3.
In women’s Open singles today, Onika Shaw face Allison Watson Jones; Imega McNab take on Shaneka Knight; Pauline Hylton oppose Isis Miller.
Top seed Micheala Stephens and second seed Shea-Ann Kameka both received byes into the second round.
The winner of the men’s singles will collect $200,000 and the runner-up $100,000, while the two losing semi-finalists will receive $50,000 each. The losing quarter-finalist will get $25,000 each, while the players losing in the round-of-sixteen will get $12,500 each.
The Women’s champion will pick up $70,000 and the runner-up $35,000, while the two beaten semi-finalists will walk away with $17,500 each.
The winners of the men’s and women’s doubles will share $20,000 each, while the losers share $10,000 each.
