Building Act debate starts today in Senate
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Senate is scheduled to commence debate on the Building Act, 2017, when it meets at Gordon House this morning.
The long delayed Bill, which started circulating through the Houses of Parliament under the previous Government, contains new provisions for the regulation of the building industry, as well as to facilitate the adoption and efficient application of national building standards, to be called the national building code.
Passed in the House of Representatives on November 7 with 24 amendments, after being piloted by Local Government and Community Development Minister Desmond McKenzie, it will facilitate the establishment of a modern framework for the built environment, by making provisions for the regulation of the building industry.
It will also repeal the Kingston and St Andrew Building Act and the Parish Councils Building Act.
