KC find comfort in Super Cup consolation
Kingston College (KC) was officially presented with the ISSA/FLOW Super Cup trophy on Monday morning at the school’s St Augustine Chapel on North Street campus after their 3-0 victory over St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) in the final at Sabina Park on Saturday.
The presentation of the trophy was made by FLOW sponsorship manager Stephen Miller to the team captain Javain Brown, coach Ludlow Bernard and Principal Dave Myrie, as well as other members of the victorious team.
KC became the fourth school to win the lucrative competition and in the process bagged $1 million for their troubles. They also ensured that the trophy remained in the Corporate Area following on the successes of urban colleagues Jamaica College, St George’s College and Wolmer’s Boys’.
Kingston College, who were heavily favoured to win the Manning Cup competition, were stunned by St Andrew Technical in the semi-finals last Wednesday, but were able to recover from the heartbreaking 1-2 loss to claim the last piece of silverware available to them after they also failed to defend the Walker Cup title they won last year, going down in an identical 1-2 margin to rivals Jamaica College.
Principal Myrie was an elated man as he addressed the school community to loud applause.
“Obviously I am very elated about it (winning the Super Cup) and I thought all along we had a very good team. We had hiccups along the way, both in terms of Walker Cup and the Manning Cup semi-finals, because we had beaten STATHS before so there was no reason why we couldn’t have beaten them, but in football you win some and some you don’t and sometimes the best team doesn’t always win.
“Next to the Manning Cup, the FLOW Super Cup must be the next big cup that anybody wants to win and so for us, we are just grateful and we are quite happy that we got over the hump and won this match. Having come off a major defeat, it’s also very difficult to bring boys up and get them motivated to play and we were able to get that done. One thing is certain: no matter how we go down, KC will always be coming back,” he said.
Miller also echoed some of the sentiments of Mr Myrie in summing up the performance of the champions.
“KC are well deserved (champions); great performance in the final, great performance from week one throughout [and] they sustained that high level, so well deserved. You see the team spirit here.
“One of the things that I believe was important was being able to lift the morale in the dressing room after the semi-final loss in the Manning Cup, and they did that and brought everything to the fore on Saturday and they did well. Congrats to them,” said the FLOW executive.
A delighted Ludlow Bernard expressed his delight working with the team for the last three years.
“I want to express the joy and satisfaction to have worked with these gentlemen, all 23 of them, over the past two to three seasons. For the school population, I want to thank you all for the support and, certainly, we are looking forward to next season when we are looking for greater things from Kingston College football team,” he said.
He went on to thank his management team, backroom staff and other members of the academic staff who played a part in preparing the boys to play.
“Definitely come 2018, we’ll have a bigger ceremony than this,” he assured the audience.
Bernard has been in charge of the senior team at KC for the past three seasons, ending a 16-year trophy drought by taking home the Walker Cup last year, before adding the Super Cup this year.
