Wolmer’s, Campion College shine at All-Island Schools Tennis’ Championships
Wolmer’s Boys’ School and Campion College captured the Under-19 boys’ and girls’ titles, respectively, at the 2017 National All-Island High Schools Team Tennis Championships at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre yesterday.
Wolmer’s Boys’ were winning the Under-19 title for the fourth consecutive year following a comprehensive 4-0 win over Campion College in the final.
Meanwhile, Campion College staved off a challenge from former many-time champions Immaculate Conception High to secure a fighting 4-2 win in the girls’ Under-19 final.
It was a good day for Campion College who won four of the six finals played yesterday in the championships, while finishing as runners-up in the other two.
Campion College’s coach Rayne Russell highlighted the championships with his record-breaking achievement as the most outstanding coach. Along with Campion College being in six finals, Russell was also the coach of two other teams in the finals — Hillel Academy who won the girls’ Under-16 final, and lost the boys’ equivalent.
Ryan Cox of Campion College and Mia Wong of Immaculate Conception were voted most valuable players overall for boys and girls, respectively.
Winning coach of Wolmer’s Boys’ Under-19 team, David Sanguinetti, said he was always confident that they would have won easily as the players acquitted themselves extremely well and won their matches convincingly to retain their title.
“The other teams made it easy for us, as they did not field their strongest and best players in the Under-19 competition, as some of them could possibly give my players a good fight,” Sanguinetti said.
Campion College’s Russell said he was satisfied with the performances of his players, especially as they were a young team.
However, Russell said the Under-19 girls were well prepared and ready for the challenge against Immaculate in the final and they played very well to come out winners. “I cannot recall the last time Campion has won, but for the past 10 years the team has been runners-up.”
“The players worked together well and they executed well, as I was always confident that the players would have pulled it off nicely,” said a delighted Russell.
Meanwhile, losing coach Dwayne Pagon said it was a good match but the team lost two close singles matches, and as a result Campion went up 3-1 before going on to win 4-2 during the deciding doubles matches.
“If the scores were even at 2-2 it would have been a little different. I had expected a tough match against Campion, but they pulled through when it really mattered most,” Pagon said.
In the boys’ Under-19 final where Wolmer’s beat Campion College 4-0, Damani Cain crushed Jaiden Flimn 6-0; Romeo Edwards whipped Nigel Stewart 5-0; Joshua Graveney beat Shane Earle 6-2, and Mario Campbell defeated Richard Bennett 7-5.
In the girls’ Under-19 final, Campion College defeated Immaculate Conception 4-2, with Jenna Harrison defeating Hayley McNair 6-3; Arianne Leo-Rhyne beating Aanchal Khemelani 5-4; Mia Sampson losing 2-6 to Mia Wong; Selena Blythe beating Kailey Chin 6-2; Amanda Bond and Zoe DaCosta losing to Chin and Kayla Jumpp 0-6, and Harrison and Sampson beating McNair and Khemelani 6-4.
In the boys’ Under-16 final, Campion College defeated Hillel Academy 3-0, while Hillel Academy beat Campion College 3-0 in the girls’ equivalent.
Campion College also captured the boys’ Under-14 final with a 2-0 win over St George’s College, while their girls defeated Immaculate Conception in the Under-14 final.
