Sooner or later…
Dear Editor,
In the 1970s, while I was listening to a fight one night on the radio between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier, the commentator said this: “Sooner or later it’s gonna be Ali.”
And so it is with this champion of crime in Jamaica — sooner or later 1,000-odd more people are going to die by the deadly hands of criminals and gunmen — unless, of course, God steps in and puts a stop to this soaring death rate, or unless the powers that be get to the root of the matter and destroy the gun trade and gunmen themselves.
First things first. Haven’t we realised that the Government, the Opposition, the commissioner of police and the minister of national security do not mention the words, “gun trade”? They shy away from it. And, unless we mash down this gun trade, or bring it under subjection, people will continue to die “like white fowl” in Jamaica.
Some 1,300 people have already been killed in this country so far, and it’s not yet the end of the year. This has become the standard in a Jamaica.
This is not a normal country. Crime, corruption and the gun pests are playing hell in this country. We are in serious trouble.
