STETHS, Clarendon, Rusea’s, Dinthill advance to Ben Francis KO semis
SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — Four former champions stayed on course for the rural area schoolboy football double after qualifying for Saturday’s semi-finals of the ISSA/FLOW Ben Francis Knockout after wins yesterday.
St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS), Clarendon College, Rusea’s High and Dinthill Technical, who had earlier qualified for the semi-finals of the daCosta Cup, stayed on course for the double and have also qualified for the first round of the FLOW Super Cup.
The draw for the first round of the FLOW Super Cup that starts on November 10 will be made today.
STETHS scored two late goals to beat outgoing daCosta Cup champions Cornwall College 3-1, Clarendon College blanked Manchester High 2-0, Rusea’s High turned back Holmwood Technical 2-0, while Dinthill Technical were also 2-0 winners over St James High.
At the St Elizabeth Technical High School Sports Complex, STETHS led 1-0 at half-time through a penalty conversion from Clifton Woodbine, but Cornwall College levelled the scores late in the second half through Aiden Jokomba.
Ronaldo Webster and Alex Thompson then scored late in the game as STETHS advanced to the semi-finals of the Ben Francis for the eighth straight year.
STETHS will face Clarendon College in Saturday’s semi-finals in a repeat of last year’s play-off as Clarendon College beat Manchester High 2-0 at Juici Field.
Nique Daley and Demario Phillips scored for Clarendon College as they advanced to back-to-back semi-finals.
Kaheem Parris took his tally of goals to 28 this season as he scored twice in the second half as Dinthill Technical beat St James High 2-0 at Dinthill to stay on course for their first ever hold on the KO title.
At Jarrett Park, Rusea’s High scored minutes apart across the half-time break to send Holmwood Technical packing.
Daniel Reid broke the deadlock in time added at the end of first half with a brilliant solo effort, weaving his way past three defenders before beating goalkeeper Daniel Russell with a powerful left-footer at his near right post as the ball flew into the far corner.
A minute into the resumption, Nazime Mattalie made it 2-0 with a sublime volley from outside the area that left Russell glued to his line as the ball flew past his left hand and into the goal.
