Several fights among students, teacher injured at Anchovy High, reports ministry
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Ministry of Education, Youth and Information said it is committed to supporting the Anchovy High School in St James after it received reports of several fights among students and the injuring of one teacher on Monday.
The ministry confirmed the reports in a release this afternoon.
It said the teacher was injured after attempts were made by him to prevent students from rushing into his office.
Two pupils attacked the teacher while other students proceeded to hit him over the head, said the ministry. The Anchovy Police station was contacted and a response team was sent to the school, where four students were held and taken to the station.
The ministry said a meeting was held with staff, members of the Community Safety and Security Branch of the Jamaica Constabulary Force and education officers yesterday.
From the meetings, it was agreed that the police would be present at devotion this morning to speak with students about their conduct and the consequences of misbehaviour.
The police will also assign a school resource officer and will organise more frequent patrols in the vicinity of the school as well as random checks of students and vendors, the ministry informed.
