STETHS, Clarendon, Rusea’s, Dinthill through to semis
SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) led four former champions into the semi-finals of the ISSA/FLOW daCosta Cup schoolboy football competition after they scored wins in yesterday’s final round of matches in the quarter-finals, as 13-time champions Cornwall College relinquished their hold on the biggest prize in the rural area competition.
STETHS were qualifying for an amazing ninth-consecutive semi-finals after topping Group Three with maximum nine points and will be joined by Clarendon College from Group One, Rusea’s High from Group Two and Dinthill Technical from Group Four — all with nine points from three wins.
They will be joined in Wednesday’s first round of the Ben Francis Knockout by the runners-up in the four zones —St James High from Group One, Cornwall College from Group Two, Holmwood Technical from Group Three, and Manchester High from Group Four.
The fireworks that were expected to end the quarter-finals on a high fizzled as Clarendon College and STETHS easily won their top-of-the-tables clashes against St James High and Holmwood Technical, respectively.
At Manchester High, Nique Daley scored a hat-trick to lead Clarendon College to a 3-1 win over St James High, who had not allowed a goal in their four previous outings.
Daley took his goals tally to 10 in five games since the end of the first round, getting more than half of his team’s 16 goals scored over that period.
At STETHS, the home team handed Holmwood Technical their first loss of the season, winning 3-0 with goals from Chris Andrew Dixon, Tahjae Palmer and Denroy Miller.
Leonardo Fogarthy scored twice at Jarrett Park to lead Rusea’s High to a 4-0 win over an overmatched St Mary Technical, with Daniel Reid and substitute Shawn Bradford getting the others.
St Mary Technical, who were getting to the quarter-finals for the first time, were outscored 11-0 in their three games in the round, and conceded 10 goals in their two trips in four days to Jarrett Park after being beaten 6-0 on Wednesday by outgoing champions Cornwall College.
Kaheem Parris scored his 26th goal of the season and Andre Fletcher got the other for Dinthill Technical, who beat Central High 2-0 at Dinthill Technical.
Manchester High rebounded from their first loss of the season on Wednesday to hammer Frome Technical 7-0 at Manchester High, with Alex Gardner scoring twice, while Brandon Brown, Marlando Maxwell, Shaquille Cain, Stephen Brown, and Okeem Powell got the others.
Cornwall College edged last year’s Ben Francis KO champions Lennon High on goal difference as they ended 1-1 in their game at Juici Field to tie on four points behind Rusea’s High.
Cornwall College had the better goal differential of five to Lennon High’s zero.
Shavon McDonald gave Cornwall College the lead before Javaughn Tindale handed Lennon High a lifeline late in the game.
Despite failing to advance after losing their first two games, Little London ended on a high after beating former champions Glenmuir High 3-2 in the first game at Juici Field.
Clive Silburn, Dadrian Davis and Obrien Smith scored for Little London.
