Dinthill snap Manchester’s 13-game win streak
CLARENDON PARK, Clarendon — Two-time champions Dinthill Technical snapped Manchester High’s 13-game win streak after beating them 2-0 at Juici Field in yesterday’s second set of matches in the quarter-finals of the ISSA/FLOW daCosta Cup schoolboy football competition, and took control of the race for the semi-finals spot from Group Four.
Two other former champions, Rusea’s High and St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS), as well as Holmwood Technical also won their second game in the round and join Clarendon College and St James High, who also won both their first two games.
The results set up two winner-takes-all games on Saturday’s third and final set of matches for places in the daCosta Cup semi-finals which are reserved for only the winners of each group.
The top two teams in each group will advance to the first round of the Ben Francis KO which starts next Wednesday.
Yesterday, Dinthill Technical, winners in 1979 and 1981 and beaten finalists two years ago, got goals from Shamari Davis in the first half and from Jerron Jackson in the second period as the vaunted Manchester High offence failed to register a goal for the first time this season.
The two goals scored against Manchester High equalled the total in their previous 13 games combined.
Meanwhile, STETHS and Holmwood Technical are tied at the top of Group Three on six points each after wins over Glenmuir High and Little London, respectively, knocking both losers out of contention for any of the two Rural Area competitions.
Denroy Miller, Demar James and Nickjay White scored for STETHS as they knocked Glenmuir High out of the competition, winning 3-1 at Manchester High.
Holmwood Technical continued their good run with goals from Philmore Virgo and Nickhari Campbell to beat Little London 2-0 at STETHS Sports Complex in Santa Cruz, but hey trail STETHS on goals scored as they are also tied up on goal-difference.
Rusea’s High made it two wins in a row as they edged Lennon High 1-0 in the second game of the double header at STETHS with Leonardo Fogarthy scoring the winner in the 21st minute.
Defending champions Cornwall College, who are losing their grip on the daCosta Cup, gave themselves a life-line after drubbing St Mary Technical 6-0 at Jarrett Park to take over second place in Group Two behind Rusea’s and on goal-difference over Lennon High, who they play on Saturday.
Aiden Jokombo scored twice, Trevaughn Walker and Garnett Hudson also scored, while national Under-15 representative Ahmal Nugent and Nigel Phillips got their first goals of the season.
In another game, Central High rebounded from Saturday’s loss to Manchester High to beat Frome Technical 3-0 and keep their hopes alive for advancing to the Ben Francis KO.
Donald Rhule, Tremaine Burke and Lorenzo Howard scored for Central High.
