Hunt heats up for D’Cup semi-final places
CLARENDON PARK, Clarendon —Two top-of-the-table clashes that could help decide two semi-finalists will highlight today’s set of matches in the second and penultimate round of games in the quarter-finals of the ISSA/FLOW daCosta Cup competition.
Former champions Rusea’s High and Dinthill Technical will play Lennon High in Group Two and Manchester High in Group Four, respectively, with the winners securing at least a place in the Ben Francis Knockout and a big step towards the semi-finals of the daCosta Cup and the Flow Super Cup.
Rusea’s High and Lennon High had wins over defending champions Cornwall College and St Mary Technical, respectively, on Saturday and are tied on three points and will meet in the second game of a double-header at the St Elizabeth Technical Sports Complex in Santa Cruz.
At Juici Field, Manchester High and Dinthill Technical, the two most prolific scoring teams in the country, will meet in a game that promises fireworks.
Meanwhile, title holders Cornwall College and former champions Glenmuir High will be fighting for their lives as they seek to rebound after loses on Saturday.
Nothing but comfortable wins today will suffice.
Last year Lennon High knocked Rusea’s High out of the competition, edging them 1-0 at Jarrett Park, but will face a confident team coming off a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Cornwall College on Saturday.
Lennon High, the Ben Francis KO holders, beat St Mary Technical 1-0 in their first game in the round, but the hard-running Rusea’s High could prove a much more difficult team to break down on a good surface that should allow for good football.
Daniel Reid, who had scored important goals for Rusea’s including a crucial equalising goal against Brown’s Town High in their second round tie a week ago, was kept off the scoresheet on Saturday, but Leonardo Fogarthy rose to the occasion.
Juici Field will be buzzing with anticipation as the free-scoring Manchester High and Dinthill Technical, with a combined 121 goals so far, meet in a game that could decide the group winners.
While Manchester High, who have scored 60 goals so far, are unbeaten through the entire season, winning all 13 games played.
Dinthill Technical, however, had one hiccup, a 1-1 draw against Bellefield High in the first-leg of their second-round tie, but have since responded with eight goals in their following two games.
Kaheem Parris, who has 25 goals, leads the Dinthill Technical attack, but faces an almost airtight Manchester High defence that has given up just two goals in 1,170 minutes of football.
Ajay Chin, Marlando Maxwell and Marcel Holness have been consistent for Manchester High.
In Group Three, St Elizabeth Technical and Holmwood Technical could set up a winner-take-all clash on Saturday if they can score back-to-back wins today.
Defending champions Cornwall College will have little option but to go on the attack from the first whistle against St Mary Technical at Jarrett Park after losing on Saturday.
Cornwall College must win their next two games to stay in the race for silverware this season.
At Frome, the home team faces a dangerous Central High team. Both teams will be desperate to make a mark after coming off losses last time out.
