CATHERINE HALL, St James — Ten-time champions Rusea’s High took charge of Group Two of the ISSA/FLOW daCosta Cup quarter-finals on Saturday night after coming from a goal down to beat defending champions Cornwall College 2-1 in front of a massive crowd at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.

Leonardo Fogarthy broke out of his lengthy goal drought and Nazime Matalie scored in the second half for Rusea’s High’s first win over Cornwall College in five years and avenged last year’s loss at the quarter-final stage of the Flow Super Cup at the same venue.

Cornwall College went into the break leading 1-0 after Auden Jokomba scored in time added on at the end of the first half.

Cornwall College, who were coming off a big 12-1 aggregate win over Morant Bay High in the second round, must now win their next two games and hope for help if they are to win the zone and advance to the semi-finals.

Rusea’s High are tied with Lennon High, their opponents on Wednesday, both on three points, but the former are ahead on goal difference.

Another former winner Glenmuir High, was also upset on Saturday, going down 0-1 to Holmwood Technical, while there were wins for Clarendon College, St James High, St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS), Dinthill Technical, Lennon High and Manchester High.

Two games will be played tomorrow — a Group One double-header at St Elizabeth Sports Complex with Clarendon College going up against Spot Valley High at 4:00 pm after St James High take on Garvey Maceo.

Cornwall College have only themselves to blame as they created enough chances in the first half when they dominated the midfield for the first half-hour but wasted their chances.

Shavon McDonald, their top scorer this year so far with 14 goals, missed from two yards out in the 24th minute as he played the ball on to the base of the right upright with no Rusea’s High player close to him.

Garnett Hudson, who started for the first time since the first round, created the clear-cut scoring chance after working his way down the left, beat three defenders and crossed the ball to McDonald who was all alone at the far post.
