NEGRIL, Westmoreland — Teenagers Blaise Bicknell and Michaela Stephens were the toasts of last weekend’s CPJ Couples Swept Away Clay Court tennis tournament in Negril, winning the men’s and women’s Open singles titles on Monday’s third and final day of the three-day tournament.

Bicknell, who was a losing semi-finalist last year, swept aside Rowland Phillips 6-1, 6-1 in the final of the men’s Open singles in the tournament, which started on Saturday and attracted a number of top players for the four categories contested.

Bicknell took home the first prize of $200,000 and the winner’s trophy, while Phillips won $100,000 and losing semi-finalists, bothers Marcus Malcolm and Makoy Malcolm, both won $43,750 each.

Stephens won the women’s Open singles by beating Shae-Ann Kameka in straight sets 6-1, 6-4, as the latter lost in back-to-back finals after being beaten by Annlisse Rose last year.

Stephens pocketed the first prize of $85,000, while Kameka took home $42,500. The losing semi-finalists Sherida Brown and Jenna Harrison both got $21, 250 each.

Dwayne Pagon retained the men’s Pro 35 title with a 6-0, 6-2 win over David Goldsmith, while Richard Deenah also retained the men’s Amateur 35 title 6-3 6-3 over Ruddy Armstrong for the second-straight year.
