Cornwall College lead 9 into daCosta Cup quarters
CATHERINE HALL, St James — Defending champions Cornwall College led eight other schools, including five former champions into the quarter-finals of the ISSA/FLOW daCosta Cup schoolboy football competition after a big 8-0 win over Morant Bay High in their return-leg, second-round game played at the Montego Bay Sports Complex yesterday.
Giovanni Reid, who was scoring for the first time this season, got two goals as Cornwall College advanced with a 12-1 aggregate after winning the first leg 4-1 in Morant Bay on Wednesday.
Former winners St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS), Clarendon College, Glenmuir High, Dinthill Technical, Frome Technical, as well as Manchester High, St Mary Technical and Holmwood Technical all booked their spots in the quarter-finals that will get under way on Saturday.
Cornwall College led 4-0 at the half after taking all of 17 minutes to break down the Morant Bay defence, but it became a procession afterwards as Reid scored twice, one in either half, while Shavon McDonald, Shaquan Reid, Trevaughn Walker, Garnett Hudson, Aiden Jokomba, and goalkeeper Davion Peterkin also got on the scoresheet.
Glenmuir High also got eight goals yesterday as Javane Thomson scored four for the Patrick Jackie Walters-coached team against Oracabessa High at the Juici Field for a 9-1 aggregate win.
Kevon Lewin, Aaron Burrell, Donald Thomas, and Tavares Wellington were also scorers for Glenmuir, who had won the first leg game 2-1 on Wednesday.
Shemar Murray and Damani Henderson scored for STETHS as they shook off the pesky Cedric Titus team 2-0 at the St Elizabeth Technical Sports Complex for a 5-2 aggregate victory.
STETHS had just edged the Trelawny-based school 3-2 in the first leg played at Jarrett Park on Wednesday.
After a big 5-1 win on Wednesday, Clarendon College only needed a 1-0 result in the second game at Juici Field to advance past Green Island yesterday.
Frome Technical eliminated Munro College 1-0 on aggregate after playing out a 0-0 draw in their return-leg game at the Frome Sports Club yesterday.
It was a bitter loss for the Munro College team that were expected to advance despite being seeded number 17, one behind Frome Technical.
After a shaky first leg here, they came from behind to draw 1-1 against nine-man Bellefield High, Dinthill Technical were in control in the return leg on their own grounds, winning 4-0 yesterday.
Kaheem Parris scored a hat-trick to lead Dinthill Technical, while Clive Freckleton got the other for the former two-time champions.
Manchester High beat Ewarton High 2-0 for a 9-1 aggregate result, as Marlando Maxwell and Ajay Chin got the goals in the game played at Manchester High.
St Mary Technical turned the tables on Steer Town in their tie, winning 3-1 yesterday after losing the first leg 1-0 at Drax Hall on Wednesday and made progress with a 3-2 aggregate.
Holmwood Technical also booked their spot with a 3-2 aggregate over Paul Bogle High after playing out a 1-1 draw yesterday.
