MONTEGO BAY, St James — A dramatic day is anticipated on today’s finals set of scheduled return games where as many as 20 schools are still in contention for the remaining 16 spots in the second round of the ISSA/FLOW daCosta Cup.

Steer Town booked their place from Zone I yesterday after beating York Castle High 2-0 in Brown’s Town and finished on 14 points, one more than Ocho Rios High.

Marlon Allen scored both goals for Steer Town made it back to back qualifications.

Brown’s Town won the zone with 15 points after their 1-1 draw against Marcus Garvey at Drax Hall.

With 17 spots already accounted for a battle royale is expected today but it is unlikely that all 32 places will be taken due to a number of games being rescheduled mainly because of bad weather and waterlogged fields. Organisers ISSA have been forced to reschedule games for Monday and Wednesday of next week.

As a result, the start of the home-and-away second round will be staggered. Yesterday, George Forbes, ISSA competitions director, told the Jamaica Observer that: “We had scheduled the first legs of the second round for Wednesday (October 11th) but with games set to be played on Wednesday, obviously those teams will play their first leg games later in the week.”

Four schools — Manchester High, Clarendon College, Dinthill Technical and Glenmuir High — will be seeking to stay perfect through the first round

Only two schools went through the first round unscathed last season, Cornwall College, who won all 10 games in Zone A, and Dinthill Technical, who won nine of their 10 games with the other being cancelled.

There will be fireworks as Titchfield High and Fair Prospect are separated by the second tie breaker :goals scored. They are tied on 10 points and a goal-difference of one goal each in Zone L, while four schools need only a point to advance.

Fair Prospect have scored eight goals to Titchfield’s seven to have the slightest of leads. They face Happy Grove, while Titchfield will be up against Horace Clarke High.

In Zone B, Green Island (20 points) and Frome Technical (19 points) are separated by a single point, but Green Island must beat Rusea’s High to have any hope, as Frome play minnows Knockalva Technical and based on form, should win easily.

Ten-time champions Rusea’s High should win the zone with 23 points as their goal difference of 26 is 10 better than Green Island’s and Frome’s.

Cedric Titus, on 17 points, need just a point from their home game against Muschett High in Wakefield, Trelawny to join Zone C winners Spot Valley in the second round.

An unlikely loss for Cedric Titus, however, would open the door for Herbert Morrison Technical who can finish on 17 points. Herbert Morrison will host Spot Valley today.

Petersfield High should rebound from their first loss of the season on Wednesday, to Little London, and a point from their Zone D game against Godfrey Stewart who must win by three clear goals to edge Petersfield on goal difference.

The zone winner is still up for grabs as a victory for Petersfield and a loss for qualifiers Little London would see Petersfield top the zone.

Denbigh High need a point against the unbeaten Glenmuir High in Zone M with Bellefield breathing down their necks. Denbigh could book a second round berth for the first time since the 2012 season.

Denbigh are on 13 points, seven behind Glenmuir. Bellefield (10 points) will face Porus High, and are coming off a 5-1 win over Foga Road on Wednesday.

Paul Bogle will face the daunting task of beating Seaforth High, who have already qualified, in their top of the Zone O clash if they are to secure second place ahead of Morant Bay High.

Seaforth had beaten Paul Bogle 1-0 in the first meeting between the two teams in the first round and a point today would be enough for them to win the zone.

Ewarton High can advance from Zone K for the first time since the 2015 season with a win over McGrath High today, but only if Bog Walk fail to beat Guys Hill.

Ewarton are on 12 points with one game to go, while Bog Walk are a point behind.

Zone J leaders St Mary Technical (21 points) only need a point from their game against second-placed Oracabessa High (15 points) to win the zone with as many of three other schools still in contention for places.

St Mary High are on 14 points and play Brimmervale (eight points) today with both teams having a game in hand.

Former champions St James High could join Zone A leaders Cornwall College in the second round with a win over Green Pond. They had beaten 5-1 in the first round.

Cornwall College will end their schedule at home to Anchovy High.

Anchovy High can score a maximum of 22 points, if they win all three remaining games.

Both Holmwood Technical, on 19 points, and Alston High, on 18 points, can advance from Zone G with wins over Knox College and Troy High, respectively.

A slip-up by any of the two would, however, give third-placed Spalding High (17 points) hope as they play Christiana High.
