Top seed Michaela Stephens is to take on Gabrielle Chin this afternoon at 5:00 in women’s singles second-round action in the 2017 General Accident Open Tennis Championship at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston.

In another match, second seed Jenna Harrison will play the winner of the Simone Hudson and Haley McNair encounter also playing today.

Third seed Sheann Kameka, who received a bye into the second round, is expected to face unseeded Malaika Masson, who got a walk-over after Sherida Brown failed to report for her match.

Heavy afternoon showers meant no play on Monday’s first day, while more wet weather forced the postponement of some matches on Tuesday.

On the men’s singles side, Damion Johnson and Dwayne Pagon led the seeds in the men’s singles to the second round.

Johnson, the defending men’s champion and top seed, also gained a walk-over into the second round, which was played yesterday evening. Johnson was to play unseeded Richard Blake who did not show for the match.

Pagon, the second seed, had lost to Johnson in last year’s final. On Tuesday Pagon swept past unseeded Alec Tomlin in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.

Johnson was scheduled to face unseeded Gregory Spencer in the second round last night. Spencer gained a walk-over to the second round after his opponent Joel Jones failed to show. Pagon was slated to go up against unseeded Jason Calloo, who defeated John Yson in his first-round match.

Third seed Jeremy Miller also advanced with a 6-3, 6-3 win over unseeded Anthony Burgess. Miller was down to play unseeded Jevon Hewitt who knocked out unseeded Luke Foster in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. The men’s quarter-finals are set to begin late today.

The winner of the men’s singles final will collect $150,000 and the championship trophy, with the losing finalist receiving $75,000. The two losing semi-finalists will get $37,500 each, and the losing quarter-finalists are to receive $18,500 each.

For the women’s singles winner, the first prize cash award will be $50,000 along with the championship trophy, while runner-up gets $25,000, and the two losing semi-finalists will collect $12,500 each.

Cash prizes will also be presented to the winner of the Men’s Professional 35 years, and also the runner-up and two losing semi-finalists.

Competition is also being played in the Men’s 45 and amateur category for women.

The quarter-finals of all categories will be played this afternoon beginning at 5:00pm.
