Champs Cornwall advance to d’Cup second round
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Defending champions Cornwall College led four new qualifiers for the second round of the ISSA/FLOW daCosta Cup schoolboy football competition after a 5-1 drubbing of Maldon High in their return Zone A game at Cornwall College yesterday.
Shavon McDonald led the way with a hat-trick as the defending champions avenged a 1-3 loss in the reverse fixture at Maldon High. Cornwall surged to the top of the zone after the St James High vs Anchovy High game was not played.
Little London advanced from Zone D, while Munro College joined Zone E winners St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) in the next round after beating BB Coke 5-1. Lennon High progressed from Zone H despite their game against Claude McKay not being played.
Spot Valley High topped Zone C with 23 points after earning a point from a 1-1 result versus Cedric Titus.
STETHS, who improved to an unassailable 23 points, were confirmed as winners of Zone E after blanking Newell High 2-0.
Clarendon College took Zone H honours after a 1-0 win over Edwin Allen High with a goal from Lamar Walker. It was their seventh-straight victory. Fifteen schools have now secured places in the second round.
Both spots from Zone I will be decided today as the competition continues with three games.
Brown’s Town, who lead with 14 points, secured their place in the second round on Wednesday. They can win Zone I today with a victory over Marcus Garvey at Drax Hall.
Steer Town, who are on 11 points, can take the runners-up spot with a win at York Castle, but if they fail to get all three points, Ocho Rios High who ended their first round earlier in the week, will be gifted the second-place spot.
McDonald, who took his tally to 11 goals, scored the first three goals for Cornwall College who led 2-0 at half-time. Trevaughn Walker and Aiden Jokomba added the other goals.
Little London beat Petersfield High 3-0 in Zone D with goals from Obrien Smith, Clive Silburn and Zidane White to move to 18 points. They ensured back-to-back qualification to the second round.
Reno Edmondson scored four times as Munro College beat BB Coke 5-1.
Claude McKay High failed to show for their game against Lennon High. However, with Clarendon College’s win over Edwin Allen, Lennon High will advance as the second-placed team from Zone H.
