Lower Buxton Primary School in St Ann is the FLOW Foundation Literacy Video Competition winner.

The competition was launched on September 8 among five primary schools, selected by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information, to mark International Literacy Day. It was held under the theme: Literacy in a Digital World.

The rural school topped four other schools from across Jamaica who squared- off in the online voting competition on Flow Jamaica’s Facebook page.

The schools were asked to create one-minute videos focusing on the theme and voting was conducted.

Lower Buxton Primary garnered the most votes and was presented with the winning prize of a Mimio Teach Portable Interactive Classroom Solution that turns any whiteboard into an interactive one. The presentation followed the announcement of the winner on September 18.

Staff and students at the school were ecstatic after they emerged winners.

“It is a great feeling. The community locally and overseas participated, and we are overwhelmed at the level of support,” said Opal Brown, principal at the school.

“It was an honour to be a part of a competition that has moved us to another level,” Brown added.

Training of the staff on the use of the electronic whiteboard board is expected to begin in October.

Seaward Primary in Kingston took second place, while Homestead Primary in St Catherine placed third.

Literacy packs for the schools’ lteracy rooms are to be presented to the second-and third-place winners.

Bull Bay Primary in St Thomas and Kew Park Primary in Westmoreland, the other participants in the competition, will also receive teaching aids for their literacy rooms.

“The schools were excited to participate and I am pleased that FLOW Jamaica was able to make a contribution to enhancing the literacy of our students at the primary level,” Courtney Bell, community programme manager at FLOW Foundation shared.
