Wray & Nephew Fight Night set for this Saturday
Going on seven months since boxing hit the parish of St Elizabeth, I-Fight Promotions and Creative Sports in association with the Jamaica Boxing Board of Control return with the blockbuster Round Two seven-fight card this coming Saturday at the Alpart Sports Club.
The announcement was made by Boxing Board of Control General Secretary Leroy Brown at the Usain Bolts Tracks and Records on Friday, where promoters Chris Joy of I-Fight Promotions and Donald Lyeow of Creative Sports, along with President Stephen “Bomber” Jones made contributions.
The diverse programme of boxing and added entertainment will also feature Breda Hype, Black Champion and Jam One.
Gates open at 6:00 pm with showtime scheduled to begin at 8:00 pm.
An after-party jam takes place from midnight until 4:00 am.
The Wray & Nephew-sponsored White Overproof Rum Fight Night spectacle of boxing will be highlighted by two six-round professional bouts featuring Kestna Davis vs Miguel “Iron Dog” Ray in the Jamaica vs Guyana main box-off.
The other professional fight on the card will see Daron Weir make his professional debut against the experienced Toriano Nicholas.
The boxing extravaganza will open with one of five amateur bouts carded. These amateur bouts will be fought consecutively over three rounds and are contested between the best amateur talent available in training, and this section of the boxing card will begin at 8:00 pm.
The first of the two professional fights between Toriano Nicholas and debutant Daron Weir will begin at the end of the amateur card. The main event will come next.
The last time “Iron Dog” visited St Elizabeth he fought Jermain Vassell on the main event and lost. This time the promising Kestna Davis will be his opponent, and a much better one at that. However, “Iron Dog” may have something up his sleeves, saying that he is in much better shape than he was seven or so months ago when he last visited the parish and fought in the main event at Treasure Beach.
“I am 121 per cent fit for this fight. You will see the best of me in action. I am always in training 24/7 to keep myself in good fighting shape as I am always expecting to be called upon to fight,” he told reporters.
His opponent, Davis, thinks that Ray is not a threat and he will not last the six rounds carded.
“I will not say that ‘Iron Dog’ is a joke fight in my career. I take every fight serious. I will see it as just another win for me as I know exactly what I am about,” Davis said.
Asked if “Iron Dog” could stay the distance of the fight against him, Davis responded with an emphatic: “No.” “He will be getting punches all through the rounds and he will not catch me,” Davis added.
