Cain, Stephens capture Quest tennis titles
TOP seeds Damani Cain and Michaela Stephens captured the Under-18 boys’ and girls’ singles titles, respectively, at the recently concluded inaugural staging of the Quest Super Series tennis tournament
It was hosted at Liguanea Club in New Kingston.
Both players went through last Sunday’s tournament without dropping a set and will be looking to dominate the second in the series scheduled for October 13-16 at the Half Moon Hotel in Montego Bay.
Cain defeated second seed Tariq Simons form Montego Bay in straight sets 6-1, 6-3, after easily disposing of Romeo Edwards in straight sets 6-3, 6-0 in the semi-final.
After his convincing performance, Cain declared that the win came as no surpirse as he had every confidence of doing well.
“I am very pleased with my win against my opponent. This was the third time both of us are facing each other and winning all three meetings is always good. He played very well nevertheless and is also a good opponent, so it was another great exposure and experience for me,” said 15-year-old Cain.
The 14-year-old Stephens continued her dominance in her ageage group, and she believes her hard work paid off in aiding her to overhaul her unseeded opponent, Abbygail Perue.
Stephens won with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Perue. She had earlier defeated 13-year-old Moesha Fox in straight sets 6-4, 6-1 in the semi-final.
“I started very slow in the first set and she went into the lead before I gained my rhythm, including focusing more to get the better of her. I maintained my focus in the second set and it paid off very well as I went on to win the match convincingly,” Stephens said.
The Boys’ Under-14 singles title was won by second seed Delano Reeves who defeated unseeded Jairdan Gibbs in straight sets 6-2, 7-6, 9-7 in the super tiebreaker set. Gibbs had earlier knocked out top seed Cole McNair 6-4, 6-2 in his semi-final, while Reeves defeated Russell Fairman 6-3, 6-2 in his semi-final.
The promising Alyssa James, at age nine, continued to make waves as she defeated 13-year-old top seed Moesha Fox to win the Girls’ Under-14 singles title 7-6 (10-8 tiebreaker), 7-6 (9-7 tie-breaker).
Jairdan Gibbs captured the Boys Under-12 singles title by defeating Joshua Haye in straight sets 6-2, 6-0.
