Glenmuir target Zone M honours
Former champions Glenmuir High could be the first school to win their zone in the ISSA/FLOW daCosta Cup football competition if they can beat Foga Road High in today’s Zone M return-round game.
It would be their sixth-straight victory.
As many as four schools could secure their places in the second round with Manchester High, Dinthill Technical and Seaforth High, all with perfect win records. They would also be sure of at least second place in their zones with victories today.
A total of 31 games, across 11 zones, will be played today as a number of teams will also intensify their quest for a place into the next round, set for October 11 and 14.
Glenmuir lead Zone M with 15 points and a victory at winless Foga Road, who have allowed 12 goals — the most in the group — would see the visitors reach an unassailable 18 points.
The Patrick “Jackie” Walters-coached Glenmuir are responsible for nine of the 12 goals scored against Foga Road after a 9-0 battering in the first-round meeting.
Denbigh can also make a big step towards qualification from Zone M as they take on last-placed Porus High, who they had edged 1-0 in the first round. Porus are yet to score their first goal of the season.
Manchester lead Zone F with a perfect 18 points, eight more than second-placed Mile Gully. Manchester host third-placed Belair High at its school field today.
In their first meeting, 10-man Manchester came from a goal down to beat Belair High 2-1.
Mile Gully, on 10 points, three more than third-placed Belair High, can strengthen their position when they host May Day High, who they hammered 11-0 in their first meeting.
Dinthill Technical, beaten daCosta Cup finalists two years ago, have been busy over the last week and will be playing their fourth game in seven days when they take on third-placed Ewarton High in Zone K.
A massive gap of 12 points separates the schools with Dinthill Technical leading on 18 points. They will be seeking to at least match their first-round 4-1 win.
Kaheem Parris, who leads all scorers with 10 strikes, looks to be in great form, while Shamari Davis has scored back-to-back braces.
Dinthill will, however, be without starting goalkeeper Demero Hill, who was sent off in their 3-1 win over Bog Walk in a rescheduled game on Monday.
Seaforth High, leaders in Zone O with 18 points, can secure their place as well with a win over St Thomas Technical, but will need help, as either second-placed Paul Bogle High or third-placed Morant Bay High must fail to win.
Paul Bogle face Robert Lightbourne, who they had beaten 6-2 in the first round, while Morant Bay take on Yallahs High. Morant Bay had won the first encounter 2-0.
Zone H leaders Clarendon College and Zone J rulers St Mary Technical will be gunning to extend their perfect starts when they take on Thompson Town and Oracabessa, respectively.
