Let aid not know race
Dear Editor,
France’s wealth, like that of many European countries, was built on the backs of colonies stretching from the Caribbean to Indochina, and even to New Caledonia in the South Pacific. Yet, unlike other colonial powers, this country has made the least effort to make amends for its evil colonial and racist past.
Fast-forward 2,010 decades. The streets of its inner cities have seen demonstations and fires and now the populace of the destroyed small islands of St Martin and St Barts are crying racism as they feel the French colonial rulers are demonstrating cold, white racism.
Communication coming out of the French islands is that there is a two-tiered policy of whites first, and blacks last. The result is now hunger, thirst, and lack of medical treatment for the black population.
It is a disgrace that, having sucked the colonies dry, having exploited people of African and Indian descent, it has pushed racism on those suffering and ailing.
It is time for the Caribbean to come together, at least at a diplomatic level, to show it displeasure, because racism is bad and evil. It takes away all God-given rights and human diginity.
Let us do what we can to assist a community of African brotherhood.
France continues to talk one way and act another. It seems to be only interested in old-time imperialism and colonialism.
