OCG looking into Junction main road project
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Contractor General Dirk Harrison this evening confirmed with OBSERVER ONLINE that his office is looking into the signing of a $626-million project, announced by the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) led administration, to improve the Junction main road in St Mary, starting in October.
A release from the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) on Friday stated that the Government would be “solely financing the rehabilitation works of the critical Junction corridor”, which links Kingston and St Andrew to the eastern parishes of St Mary and Portland.
Harrison a short while ago confirmed that he received a letter from the Opposition People’s National Party (PNP), which has chided the Government, saying it is “more than coincidental” that the announcement of the project was being made prior to the calling of a by-election to fill the vacant St Mary South Eastern seat.
“We are going to be watching it very carefully,” PNP general secretary, Julian Robinson, told a press briefing on Friday’s private session of the four-day-long annual party conference at the National Arena, warning that the Opposition will stoutly resist the project if there is any indication of partisan practices.
The St Mary South Eastern constituency became vacant with the sudden death of PNP MP Dr Winston Green.
Dr Shane Alexis, the PNP’s standard-bearer, will run against the Jamaica Labour Party’s (JLP’s) Dr Norman Dunn, who ran unsuccessfully against Green in the February 2016 General Elections.
