13 remain unbeaten in daCosta Cup
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Thirteen schools led by defending champions Cornwall College and including four other former winners are undefeated after the first full week of games in the ISSA/FLOW daCosta Cup schoolboy football competition.
Nine schools, including Cornwall College and Clarendon College, have won their first three games with four others winning both games played so far.
Spot Valley in Zone C, Manchester High in Zone F, Ocho Rios in Group I, Oracabessa High in Group J, Dinthill Technical in Group K, Glenmuir High in Group M and Seaforth High in Group O have all won their first three games.
Edwin Allen in Zone H, St Mary Technical in J and Central High and Garvey Maceo in Group M have won both games played and are still perfect.
Lamar Walker with seven goals and Ricardo McIntosh with six have combined to score 13 of Clarendon College’s 22 unanswered goals scored so far, the most by any schoolboy team. Sixteen goals came in one win over Claude McKay High.
Kaheem Parris of Dinthill Technical and Mile Gully High’s Marlon Miller, who has scored back-to-back hat-tricks to start the season, have scored six goals each while Andre Cunningham of Frome Technical, Roneil Harris of Glenmuir High and DeMar James of St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) have scored five goals each.
On Saturday, Cornwall College extended their winning streak to 21 games after beating St James High, their biggest rivals in Zone A, 2-1 at the Montego Bay Sports Complex, taking over sole leadership of the zone.
This was Cornwall’s third-straight victory over the Theodore Whitmore-coached team to which they have not lost to since 2013 and were conceding a goal against them for the first time in three games.
Clarendon College exploded for five second-half goals against Ben Francis KO champions Lennon High on Saturday, while Dinthill Technical cruised past Guy’s Hill 5-1 for their third victory.
Twelve teams are yet to concede a goal after at least two games played including Spot Valley High, Clarendon College, Ocho Rios, St Mary Technical, Central and Garvey Maceo, as well as Seaforth High.
Anchovy High, Green Island, Little London, STETHS and Holmwood Technical also are yet to concede a goal while eight schools — Kemps Hill, Porus, Foga Road, Happy Grove, York Castle, Claude McKay, DeCarteret College and Irwin High are still waiting to score their first goal of the season.
