Cardenas returns
Former champion jockey Dick Cardenas is set to return to regular race riding at Caymanas Park tomorrow.
The Panamanian-born Cardenas who has been riding at various race tracks in the United States for over a year now, has secured nine rides on the 12-race card including six for trainer Anthony Nunes.
The Cardenas mounts for Nunes are first time starter, two-year-old Patriarch, Ocean Seeker, Mirabilis, Bilingual, Kanaloa, and Late N Drafty. His other rides on the day are Catch The Flight for trainer Renex Burrell, Gaga Lady for trainer Gary Crawford, and Phineas from the barn of trainer Andrew McDonald.
Cardenas last rode in Jamaica on Derby Day (June 24) when he guided the Ian Parsard trained Henry The Second. As it turned out, Henry The Second did not finish the race because of injuries.
Before the Derby at the end of May, Cardenas returned to Jamaica to ride Henry The Second in the Lotto Classic run for the Governor’s Cup — a race in which he passed the post first but was subsequently disqualified by the raceday stewards and the race awarded to Market Force trained by Richard Azan and ridden by Shane Ellis. Henry The Second was moved down to second place.
The Supreme Racing Guide has been told by early morning railbirds that Cardenas will be riding in Jamaica for at least the next six months. He is expected to arrive in Jamaica today for his riding assignments.
