Wolmer’s blank Haile Selassie 2-0
Wolmer’s Boys’ School maintained their 100 per cent win record in the ISSA/FLOW Manning Cup football competition after two games following their 2-0 win over Haile Selassie High at Payne Avenue yesterday.
Xavian Crosdale opened the scoring with an 11th-minute fortuitous strike after goalkeeper Mark Williams’s three important saves from a goal mouth scrimmage had failed to keep the score even.
Rivaldo English then came on as a half-time substitute to make the victory with a goal in minute 63.
After opening season wins both teams entered the contest with great spirit, but it was Wolmer’s, the many-time champions, who looked the more composed team and began to lay siege in the Haile Selassie goal area. That being so, it was not surprising when the Marescaux Road boys went ahead, but although Haile Selassie redoubled their efforts to get on terms their turnover rate was atrocious and they suffered the consequences of losing the 100 per cent record even playing at home.
Rudolph Speid, though pleased with full points, said: “We did not play well. We did enough to win, but that is not good enough. Haile Selassie is a good team, but they themselves failed to play as well as they could and we failed to take greater advantage.”
Opposing coach Perry Bartley said: “It was not only disappointing to lose at home in our first game, it was the manner in which we went about losing the ball in our turnover rate. Our concentration was also very poor,” he lamented.
